School Children Morning Devotion Cancellation in Calabar

tension is brewing in Cross River State, after the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, rejected the directive by the state government to stop morning devotion in secondary and primary schools across the state, saying such a directive is totally unacceptable to the association.

In a statement, CAN state chairman, Archbishop Joseph Edra Ukpo, yesterday, called on the state government to immediately withdraw the directive as it negated freedom of worship in the state.

The statement said: “Sequel to the letter from the Ministry of Education with reference No MOE/S132/VOL 1, by the Permanent Sectary of the Ministry of Education dated October 21, directing public and private primary/secondary schools across the state to suspend all assemblies (morning and afternoon) till further notice, the Christian Association of Nigeria , Cross River State chapter, hereby, says that such directive is totally unacceptable. This directive will negatively affect the moral upbringing of our children who are future leaders of this country.”

Mrs Anne Odey, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education in the state, had last week, written a letter to all schools across the state, both primary and secondary, ordering the suspension of morning and afternoon devotions.

When contacted, Mrs Odey said the directive came from the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Henry Fadairo, in view of prevailing security concerns in the country, adding that it was not the state government that was trying to stop the age long practice established by missionaries who established most of the schools in the state.

Man Who Stole From Bishop Oyedepo Runs Mad

Many people make light of one of the commandments of the Supreme Being, which states thus “thou shall not steal”. Countless number of times, this simple instruction has been flouted with several culprits getting away unscathed, but, that is not the case this time as you are about to discover.

If you are a clergyman or you are one of those who steal from sacred places, desist so you won’t end your life the way this man did.

Olawore, the man with the light fingers was employed as an accountant with the Living Faith Worldwide a.k.a Winners Chapel some years ago.

It is mandatory that anyone who wants to work with the religious body, must undergo the church’s pastoral training irrespective of the educational credentials presented. Before Olawore was employed, he was duly made to understand this pre-requisite.

He was therefore enrolled at the theological seminary, from where he subsequently graduated and was employed as an accountant in the church.

Mr. Olawore as he was called to resume work and was assigned to counting and recording the church’s proceeds after every service. According to an insider, the church’s strong room has close circuit cameras installed in all the environ except the toilets. Olawore alongside other fellow accountants are saddled with the responsibility of counting the money and separating the hard currency from the local bill.

Olawore, a close family source revealed was very close to the bishop because of his intelligence, this paved way for him to head the department after a few years of his stewardship.

But despite being close to the richest pastor in the world, Mr. Olawore and some of his colleagues were found to be stealing from the church’s treasury. How did they do that with the Close Circuit TV monitors around?

We gathered that they pinned the money in their hand and take excuse to visit the toilet where they would now hide it somewhere they would later have access to, because, after close of work, everyone will be subjected to thorough search before they are cleared to leave the strong room……

“sometimes they spend up to three days counting money and separating the hard currencies in different denomination. The tithes are directly paid into the Bishop’s account.

It became possible for them to steal hard currencies of higher denominations because these are monies that will last them sometime three days to finish counting. And while performing that duty, some of them were always using the convenience place to keep the money till after they are through with it the exercise before they would later go for their harvest” an inside source told us.

You would be shocked that many atimes the cleaners have even made themselves rich as they often see monies stashed in polythene and kept in the WC or sometime use the brush holder as piggy banks to keep the money.

Few months into this act, Olawore who is said to be blessed with the gift of prophecies was always seeing where others used to keep their stolen ‘goddies’ and as he has seen it, he would always go directly to retrieve the stolen loot.

It got to a point that the money was so enormous and he started buying lands all over the place mostly at Agbado area of Lagos, and at the same time living large and enjoying life to the fullest, but he could only do this for a short while, as his insatiable greed and appetite for women ruined him and all he has acquired through this shady means all went down the drain.

As you are reading this, Mr. Olawore seems to have become a recluse and is often seen muttering to himself while walking the streets without any hope of him regaining his sanity.

A Cure Has Been Discover For Sickle Cell

Many who have abandoned their marriage because of this sickness had wished the cure came earlier.

Oover five million sickle cell patients in Nigeria and other African countries can now heave a sigh of relief as the University of Ibadan in partnership with the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and University of Loyola, Chicago have discovered a permanent cure for the terminal disease.

The cure of the deadly disease
According to the Professor of Medicine, Victor Gordeuk, who is the Director, Sickle Cell Centre, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and his colleagues, Prof. Damiano Rondelli, also from the same university and Prof. Bamidele Tayo, University of Loyola, Chicago this new treatment is done through bone marrow transplant and that it is less risky.

This was revealed at the University College Hospital, Ibadan after a three-day brainstorming session with other experts in the teaching hospital.

Unlike the other conventional method of stem cell transplant which exposes patients to radiation which could cause cancer, first blood and marrow stem cell transplant, BMT, is much more effective.

The experts who were flanked by the Chief Medical Director, UCH, Prof. Temitope Alonge, Dr. Titilola Akingbola, an haematologist and Dr. Foluke Fasola, said this stem cell transplant is a standard procedure for the treatment of many blood cancers in both adult and children.

He said: “With this chemotherapy-free transplant, we are curing adults with sickle cell disease, and we see that their quality of life improves fast within just one month of the transplant.

“About 90% of the approximately 450 patients who have received stem cell transplants for sickle cell disease have been children. Chemotherapy has been considered too risky for adult patients, who are often more weakened than children by the disease.

“Adults with sickle cell disease can now be cured without chemotherapy — the main barrier that has stood in the way for them for so long. Our data provide more support that this therapy is safe and effective and prevents patients from living shortened lives, condemned to pain and progressive complications.”

“In the new procedure, patients receive immuno-suppressive drugs just before the transplant, along with a very low dose of total body irradiation, a treatment much less harsh and with fewer potentially serious side effects than chemotherapy.”

“Donor cells from a healthy and tissue-matched sibling are transfused into the patient. Stem cells from the donor produce healthy new blood cells in the patient, eventually in sufficient quantity to eliminate symptoms. In many cases, sickle cells can no longer be detected. Patients must continue to take immunosuppressant drugs for at least a year."

British Royal Navy Warship Arrives In Nigeria

Following its assurance to assist Nigeria defeat the dread Boko Haram,  the British High Commission has disclosed that one of the country’s Royal Navy ships, HMS Lancaster has arrived Nigeria, on Tuesday.

It was gathered that shortly after the state-of-the-art Type 23 Duke Frigate arrived the country on Tuesday, the ship’s captain and the UK’s Defence Adviser in Nigeria, Colonel Dominic Fletcher, and his colleagues made a call on the Western Naval Command, Apapa, and were received by its Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Ralph Osondu.

A subsequent statement issued by the British High Commission stressed that HMS Lancaster’s visit “shows continuing UK commitment to Nigeria, and to supporting Nigerian military as they deal with security threats at land and at sea.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul T Arkwright, was quoted as saying that “The visit of HMS Lancaster is a signal of our commitment to Nigeria and Nigeria’s military forces as they face security challenges.

“The U.K. government is firmly committed to supporting President Buhari’s government and prioritizes across the board, in particular when it comes to scarcity.”

As seen at the Lagos Airport today.

A Teacher asks students a question about God, then tells them what their answer should be

Jordan Wooley is a 7th grade student at West Memorial Junior High School in Katy, Texas.
After receiving an assignment that made her uncomfortable, she chose to speak before the board of the Katy Independent School District:

“I was given an assignment in school that questioned my faith and told me that God was not real.
We were asked to take a poll to say whether God is fact, opinion or a myth and she told anyone who said fact or opinion was wrong and God was only a myth.”

“Mythology”, according to dictionary.com, is a fairly nuanced term:

“…a set of stories, traditions, or beliefs associated with a particular group or the history of an event, arising naturally or deliberately fostered.”

A “myth”, then, can be based in fact or fiction but the students may not have been aware of that definition, and the teacher may not have been using it, myth, as a colloquialism, implies a fictional base.
Several students were very upset by the assignment; some of them because any student who persisted in claiming that God is real faced a reduction in grades. Jordan continued:

“Another student asked the teacher if we could put what we believe in the paper, and she said we could … but you would fail the paper if you do.
I had known before that our schools aren’t really supposed to teach us much about religion or question religion. When I asked my teacher about it she said it doesn’t have anything to do with religion because the problem is just saying there is no God.”

When Jordan was asked how the interaction made her feel, she responded:

“I felt like she was taking away my religion, what I believe is true.”

The seventh-grader had previously challenged her school when they held no memorial on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, naming the day “National Make Your Bed Day” instead.
The school board has promised to look into the situation.

MTN is in trouble once again

Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has fined MTN Nigeria the sum of N1.04 trillion for breaching subscriber identity module, SIM, registration rules.

NCC Director, Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, said MTN was discovered to be harboring about 5.2million flawed SIM cards on its network which it failed to deactivate.

MTN was also accused of pre-registering SIM cards in its systems which made it impossible to authenticate the personal details of subscribers, thereby compromising national security.

President Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, Lanre Ajayi in reaction to the penalty described it as “inappropriate” adding that a fine should measure up to the offence.

Last month NCC sanctioned four leading telecom operators including MTN for having pre-registered SIM cards in their systems.

Other culprits were Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat Nigeria which along with MTN were mandated to pay N120.4 million for failing to fully comply with the commission’s directive to deactivate pre-registered and defective customer SIM cards.

MTN, which controls over 62 million subscribers, was asked to pay N102.2 million while Globacom was slammed with N7.4 million; Etisalat N7 million and Airtel N3.8 million.

MTN in reaction to the sanction promised to resolve the matter with NCC.

“Leading ICT Company in Nigeria, MTN confirmed that the NCC has imposed a N1.4 trillion fine ($5.2billion) on MTN Nigeria.

“This fine relates to the timing of the disconnection of the 5.1million MTN subscribers that were disconnected in August and September 2015 and is based on a N200, 000 fine for each improperly registered subscriber.

“MTN Nigeria is currently engaging with the NCC to resolve the matter.”

According to NCC, the use of biometrics for SIM card verification not only works as evidence of ownership credentials, but it also creates a sense of accountability among SIM card owners to not use their mobile phones for any kinds of criminal activities.

The regulatory body added that the measure was meant to correct the anomalies discovered on the biometric data of the SIM cards purportedly registered by the telcos and shipped to the regulator for safe-keeping which they had continued to vacillate.

Ojobo since 2012 had insisted that all improperly registered SIM cards be deactivated was informed by the security situation in the country, adding that all the security agencies in the country were carried along in the decision to deactivate all defectively registered SIM cards.

Bokoharam cannot force me out - Buhari

Following the recent boko haram onslaught against the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari has insisted he will not resign from office if the Nigerian Military fails to end insurgency by December as promised.

Buhari stated this on Friday while speaking to Al Jazeera, insisting he is determined to stamp out the ungodly activities of the sect even if it outlived December, 2015.

The President during his presidential campaign had vowed to tackle the extremist sect , with his first move against them being the relocation of the military command and control centre to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as early as his inauguration day.

Despite the doggedness of the military to give the radical Islamic sect a run for their money, the insurgents have continually bombed the N/East with the latest of such episodes being the attack of a Mosque, early Friday morning in Maiduguri, leaving several people dead.

On October 2, Boko Haram bombers surged all the way to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with twin bomb blasts in Nyanya, a location which is 12 minutes drive to Asokoro where the presidential villa is.

Kuje, a town that houses the Kuje Maximum Prison was also attacked on the same day.

To political critics, Buhari’s marching order to the military to defeat Boko Haram by December may be a pipe dream.

With what seemed like the high morale of the military in combating the sect, Buhari maintained that the battle against terror must be fought and won.

The President during the interview declared that he “will not resign” even if he doesn’t fulfill his promise to defeat Boko Haram by December. “I will…stay and fight it out,” he said indignantly.

He however added he was dealing to parley with the terrorists to try and free the kidnapped Chibok girls: “We said it and we meant it.

“They have to prove to us that they are alive, they are well, and then we can…negotiate with them,”

When asked whether he would offer financial payments, or a prisoner release, to Boko Haram in return for the girls, Buhari did not rule out either option.

“It depends on the negotiations with the leadership of Boko Haram.”

The President stressed his belief that defeating Boko Haram by the end of 2015 was not in any way him clutching vapours

“As soon as the rainy season comes, which is by the end of the year […] Boko Haram will virtually be out of their main stronghold and that will be the end of it [….] Attacks by Boko Haram on townships, on military installations, will certainly stop.”
